What documents do I need to import my vehicle?

This depends on which country you are importing your vehicle from and what type of vehicle you are importing.

A vehicle owner/importer must provide documentation that proves that the vehicle complies with New Zealand’s legal requirements. Specific requirements depend on the vehicle’s class, date of manufacture and/or date of first registration.

Immigrant vehicles – additionAL cost before producing MR2A

  • Petrol : Manufacturing date is before July 2010
  • Diesel : Manufacturing date is before January 2007

Documents required :

  • Proof of Ownership (ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS NOT PHOTOCOPIES - overseas registration papers in the owner’s name for 1 year, or export certificate or de-registration documents).
  • Proof of Importation (bill of landing, shipping or insurance documents in the importer’s name).
  • ADR Plate (Australian Vehicles Only). - Pictured Below (full ADR Plate details click here).
  • Proof of New Zealand citizenship or residency, or entitlement to take up permanent residence in New Zealand.
  • Proof of ID (Identification Accepted - Passport, Drivers License).
  • Proof you lived in the country for the last 21 months – Deed Of Undertaking.  Can be obtained from NZ Customs.

The application is made: within 18 months of the applicant’s arrival in or return to New Zealand (Airline tickets or email confirmation sent from airline can be accepted).

* There are other standards if you are importing a vehicle from Japan, Australia, Europe and the USA.

Non-Immigrant VEHICLES

  • Petrol : Manufacturing date is after July 2010
  • Diesel : Manufacturing date is after  January 2007 

Documents required :

  • Proof of Ownership (Original DocumentS NOT PHOTOCOPIES - overseas registration papers in the owner’s name).
  • ADR Plate (Australian Vehicles Only)  - Pictured BelowFull ADR Compliance Plate details click here ). 
  • Proof of ID (Identification).

The application is made: within 18 months of the applicant’s arrival in or return to New Zealand (Airline tickets or email confirmation sent from airline can be accepted).

ADR Plates are usually found under Bonnet, Hood, Door Pillars, Door Edge / Door Flames, Boot or Trunk.
